Athletics at the Secondary School
If you have a child entering the secondary school, please take a few moments to review the following information regarding Athletics registration and pre-season camps.
Leagues are competitive sports between schools. Students must try out for a league team in order to be a member, especially in basketball. In the Secondary, leagues are divided into 3 seasons: Fall, winter and spring. Different sports are offered each season (e.g. Soccer and Cross country in the fall, basketball only in the winter, Etc.). Each student may participate in one, two or three seasons and there is no fee.
Prior to each league season, there is a tryouts camp. The fall camp takes place at Pontiac for 9 to 12 grade from August 27 to August 29 and at FASNY, 145 New Street, Mamaroneck location for 6 to 8 grade from August 30 to September 1 before school starts. The winter and spring camps are held at FASNY during school year. Since the camp is at the end of the summer, participation to the camp is not mandatory. However, your participation to the camp shows your desire of entering the Team. Once selected, you may not refuse your selection. The preseason camp is not a vacation extension.
Please also take into consideration that if your child does not attend Preseason Camp, he/she will be required to complete a mandatory 10 practices prior to the first competition.
For example, if your child is only interested in basketball, which is a winter sport, he or she does not go to Pontiac because his or her tryouts will take place later in the year. The FASNY takes care of transportation to training locations and matches for students who are selected for a league. A schedule of practices and matches, specific to each team, is put on the website before each season. Matches sometimes take place during school hours. It is then up to each student to arrange to make up those classes with the help of a friend. No class is missed for practices, as these are always after classes.
