April was National Poetry Month, and fifth graders in the “B” class engaged in literary pursuits in both French and English. They participated in the Printemps des poètes, whose theme this year was beauty. Utilizing their bilingual skills and drawing on their cultural repertoire, 5B students translated several poems and then compared the translations.
Before departing on their overnight trip to Lowell, Massachusetts, to learn more about the Industrial Revolution, they read two historical fiction novels—Lyddie and Claudine de Lyon—in English and French, respectively, and subsequently compared and contrasted the title characters in each book.
